What does a BMW software update actually do?

Ok so it turns out that this place didn't have the "MOST" tool with the optical cable, which is what is needed to do the idrive upgrade.

Back to getting it coded by a local. Does anyone know if there's a minimum CIP needed to program the bluetooth/mp3 playback? I know the SIB lists 13.2 and 20 but I'm wondering if it can be done if I have a lower software...

I just checked the "hidden" obc menu and got the following software reading:

49.50.04 This doesn't seem to fall in line with the other CIP versions...

Continuing to talk to myself ( it looks like I should be good to go. It looks like the software came out in 2007-2008, so I will just need to get it coded. Thank god for some german skills...

That's how it is around here sometimes. Hard to help you when you don't have any tools available to you. You need to be able to read your I-level either with Tool32 or the readout from Progman. There might be other ways but I'm sure they also include some type of tool.

KLR4LIFE, I'm in the NYC area as well and am looking into moding my 08 550... Can you connect me w/ your coder?

Thanks,

It would be nice, if someone had access to the update summaries, if not the files themselves to give us an idea of what the updates do.

I talk to my indy mechanic about updating software in my 05 545i and he said that when you do updates you could fry a module and end up having to spend hundreds of dollars on replacing modules... anyone heard of that?

Minimum version of CIP for what you want should be CIP 21. But this is old. You will not be able to update unless you try to update with an ICOM or OP(P)S via MOST. However if you get your hands on WINKFP then you can take the backdoor route that will take a long time. You will have several modules to do for a CCC or have a battery charger giving a constant voltage ready.
