Well, there is actually a marketing trick in this. BMW is always showing their cars (in ads and in the showroom) with the "big rims" to give a nice impression to the customers, so that they want those rims also. But because they are an option, the customer has to pay lot's of money extra to get them, which results in extra profit for BMW.
I have even read somewhere that car manufacturers make the standard rim look ugly on purpose, only to make as much customers as possible buying the more expensive rims.

Its just all about marketing in order to achieve as much profit as possible, and all car manufacturers are using this technique.

I would agree with this and I would accuse other manufacturer's of doing this. I saw a brand new 535xi today and looked at the wheels and about lost my lunch. I could only imagine that most buyers are too cheap to spend the extra money to upgrade. I did not like even the stock wheels this past years models offered without the sport package.

This will come to bite BMW in the ass if they push it too hard. I think that BMW marketing is spending too much time looking at this forum and not paying enough attention to the 'average' BMW customer. The folks on this board are willing to spend a few more bucks for their cars. Most are not.

Before (18" standard wheels) and after (19" OEM BMW wheels with all season performance tires, set me back $2600 and change) for my car"

I like the stock wheels better--less pimp, more style, to each his own I guess--for $2600 I think I would have bought a nice case of Bordeaux...

I'm trying to figure out why BMW insist on putting the crappy RF on a $60K + luxury sport sedan. Porsche gets it as they put Michelin PS2s on their vehicles.

If I'm not mistaken, I think BMW stopped putting RF tires on the 2008 sport models. The 2008 535i sport I looked at did not have RF tires.

I think the 535i sport does have the RFTs on the Style 124 rims - unfortunately...
