To sort of add to this, how much does color actually affect resale. Should I actually be worried about this if I'm going to buy a car and sell it in, let's say 5 years? 4 Years? 3 Years? I certainly love white but hey if I can get $2000 or more back by just getting black I'd be seriously considering that color.

I figure if I'm spending 60k for a car, then it's going to be the color I want. I'll hang on to it for a while so I'm not too concerned about getting a few hundred dollars more when I sell. Same thing with options---

In the UK at least black and silver are very safe bets. Any dark metallic is also pretty safe. UK drivers of this type of car shy away from light or non-metallic colours.
I concur....Silver or Black

My Ride: 2005 545i Sport, Premium, Logic 7, Jet Black, Black Leather, M-Aero Kit, 15% (very dark) Tint, Eichbach Lowering Springs, Red Brake Calipers, Radenergie R-10's, Michelin PilotSport2 in 245/35/20 and 285/30/20, Rolled Fenders, and a nifty Graco Baby Car Seat.
Next Up: Xenon fogs, Eisemann Exhaust, iPod Interface, Comfort Seats.
Silver or Black.
Silver retains more value because it tends to look cleaner and appear free from swirls and wear, so it looks better and can hence sell for more. Black shows all those imperfections, but still sells well because it's an in-demand color.
Just avoid the "niche" colors, which are rare on BMW's anyway. Those would be the browns, strange greens, etc. that some people simply won't buy, no matter the condition, miles, or price.
An example, my Dad drives a Camry that is a color called "Espresso Black Pearl." He got it for a sweet deal because it actually is the color of what goes down the toilet. No one would buy it, so he took it at a great price since he coudn't care less as long as it gets him from point A to point B.
