I have a Lexus RX330 for the winter. Sometimes you just can't beat weight and ground clearance in crappy New England weather. But other than winter I would not want an X6. The thing is an engineering marvel but it weighs a ton and you can feel it when your drive. The X6 may be able to produce numbers like a sedan, skid pad, lane change... but IMO it still doesn't feel like one when you drive it. Many people love X5's, I think they are the best SUV you can buy but they don't hold a candle to a 3 or 5 series for driving experience. my .02
I had a jet black 535xi Touring for a loaner last week, and it snowed like hell. Car was awesome. I would take that over an X6 every time. Add a Dinan software upgrade and you have the ultimate all weather road rocket

Not quite as polished as a BMW (X5) however for a third of the money go buy an 08 Jeep SRT8 Grand Cherokee (new ~$50k, used high twenties), truly love mine. Fast as snot (sub 5 easy) AWD, interior is really nice, great features (bluetooth, HID lights, auto bright headlights, Brembos, 20" wheels, etc). Just took mine (over the 545i) to Montreal and loved it....what a pleasure to drive.
Just my two cents!

We had an '08 until I noticed a certain 6-speed 535xit that we really "needed" instead.
No regrets on the the SRT8 though, and I don't think it drove like an SUV at all.
We drove it from Pittsburgh to Nashville one beautiful day for the Van Morrison concernt and it rocked on the highway... we cruised at 80+ all day. We drove it home in torrential rains the next day and it rocked on the highway... we cruised at 75-80+ whenever the left lane was clear.

I think you're insane. I'd take an X5 over an X6. The X6 handles great but you do feel the weight. That tiny rear window is a joke and it seats only 4. I like the X6 exterior styling but I don't get the market since its about $10K more than a similarly equipped X5. Now if it was 10K less than an X5 then I could see the market.

That is obvious, but its also nice to be a little higher up. And if you have a 500 HP x6 that drives like a sports car it may be a tough choice.

I'm in the same boat as you. If you have a little time, why not wait for the X5 5.0 TT when it comes out? Thats what I'm aiming for in the future since we're trying to have kids soon.

Secondly though, the X5 5.0 TT you mention is likely going to be the M X5, which = big $$$ A fully loaded X5 4.8 is over 75k. That is probably the starting point for an M X5 (although a nicely equipped X6 is just as much).
But really the most important thing to stress is that they are very different cars. The X5 seating position is more upright giving a sense of sitting on the seat, whereas the X6 puts you at more of a sports car angle with a feeling that you're in the cockpit. And the handling is totally different. The X5 is an excellent handling SUV, but the X6 really doesn't even deserve to be put into the SUV category. It feels more like a heavy 6 series.
Anyway,
We'll have to see what BMW Bank does with the residuals and money factors before any decisions are made...
