Hi I am new here. I bought a 2008 528i about three months ago and have had nothing but issues with it and the dealership. The latest problem according to the service department is water has gotten into the trunk and shorted out the Electrical control module (unsure of exact name of component). It needs to be replaced along with some connectors and wire. The cost to me since it is not covered under warranty is 1600.00. Does anyone know what this part is? The part #? Can I change it out myself or does a service shop have to do this?
The other thing is once I replace everything I am afraid water will get into the trunk again and start this all over again. The Service department can not determine where the leak is.
Any help will be appreciated.

I had water in the trunk issue also and this was a known BMW recall / service bulletin.

If you open the battery area on the right there is a vent there. That vent is supposed to vent the acidic air from the battery, etc and keep that whole electrical area flowing with air. That vent on some E60 models allows water to get in. I found my battery sitting in 5" of water a year ago. I was VERY lucky nothing happened. Fortunately my dealer fixed this by filling in the vent with a solid foam and sealed it up totally (the BMW bulletin explains to techs how to fix this). All covered under BMW CPO (mostly because dealership was cool about it) and I didn't pay a penny.

Good luck and welcome to the forums. =p

Thanks for the tip! Does any one own an 2008 5 series with similar problems? Dealership does not want to warranty it!? Is it worth going to BMW USA?

I had a similar situation in early June.

My trunk lid seal was leaking and flooded the trunk/tire well. That took out the RDC control unit.

My symptom was a malfunctioning tire pressure monitor error (warning light).

The dealer replaced the defective seal, the RDC unit and several trunk panels.

All done under warranty at 28971 miles.
