HAHHAA....nice insight....i knew i could count on the forum.....Lots of different views, and i seem to like the independent mechanic one myself. I'm the type of person that usually does not go to the dealer, but i really didn't know what happened, and it looked kinda scary when i'm in the middle of the highway with plastic pieces in the engine everywhere (thermostat), belt loose, and computer messages saying that my battery was discharged. On top of that the coolant everywhere and smoke out of the engine (from the coolant). I've already planned to just get AAA membership rather than relying on the roadside assistance....

I didn't even go to the dealership for the spark plugs. I spent $60 on spark plugs and 3 hours of my time, and i saved like $500 in labor. But thanks guys for all your insight, no more dealership from now on, and i'm just going to keep it and fix anything that comes up myself, and if i can't do it myself, its going to the local independent dealer.

I'll consider this repair a donation to the Susan Komen fund through BMW....

Im not sure if the maintainence on an M6 would be cheaper once the warranty on the M6 runs out... have you considered extended warranty for your E60.
yeah, but you'd have an M6

I remember several years ago I was driving down a road in SE GA late at night in the middle of NOWHERE with no cellular coverage when the voltage meter on the dasboard suddenly dropped. I knew it was the alternator. Luckily I made it home (the car died as I pulled in the parking space. The next morning I opened the hood to look at the alt and found a bug lodged in its windings. The little critter fried himself, shorted out the alt, and damn near left me stranded. Talk about luck? Go figure......
My buddy's range rover belt fan stopped working and he found a pretty large bird lodged in there! So there is the lucky factor... Not like the range rover is a very reliable vehicle without mechanical issues of it's own
