On Sunday, had to tow the car to the dealership and it was the water pump. $1250....just picked up my car today and i'm wondering whether i should keep my car or trade it in. I hate costly repair bills and i know its an out in the air question but....in your 545s what has gone wrong after 100k.....my certified warranty was just over 4000 miles ago and now i have about 104,000.

It was kinda scary, steering wheel stopped working and coolant everywhere, serpentine belt came loose.

Do we have some kind of timing belt in our cars?

I did see a nice 2006 Alpine White M6 on cars.com for $47k, and it has 47k miles on it.....but not certified. But i could always buy the certified warranty.....

Sorry to hear about this, but our cars are expensive and expensive to maintain. Once my warranty expires, I take my BMWs to a very good independent BMW shop. I bet he would have charged half as much or just a little more than half.

This is what I usually do when my warranty expires. I price out another BMW and figure out the monthly payments. I then make believe that I buy the car and start putting the monthly payment in a savings account. I do this for about 4 years, since I keep my BMWs for 8 years. Then, whenever my car needs repairs, I take the money out of the special "payments" account and I feel no pain whatsoever about the repair bill. At the end of the 4 years, I usually end up with a tidy amount in this account. I then look for another BMW and use the tidy amount as a down payment thus making my real payments very low and affordable, and then the cycle starts again. G/L with whatever you decide.

Yeah, that cost is from the dealer. Better find a BMW independent shop in your town and they know BMW stuff and will cost you half or even 3/4 price. My 545i already had replaced the Water Pump and my mechanic billed me $390 including the part, coolant flush and labour.

Im not sure if the maintainence on an M6 would be cheaper once the warranty on the M6 runs out... have you considered extended warranty for your E60.

The waterpump itself is atleast $450. Not sure how your mechanic could have changed that for $390 including waterpump. You should confirm that the WP was actually changed.

I use the same logic for my gas heating boiler which is now 17 years old!I am still in profit because I have been able to source spare parts and do the repairs myself rather than paying annual "insurance" for repairs..I have to admit that I have never kept a car for more than 5 years.
