Hi,

I synced my phone to the car and have all entries showing in the phone book on the screen that I can scroll through using the iDrive wheel. However when I use the voice command button if I try to dial by name I hear "Phonebook empty" in reply. Also, when I voice prompt the actual number with "Dial ###...." it replies "Dialing ###...." and then nothing happens, never connects. Any ideas anyone? or am I going to have to bring it to a dealership? It's CPO'd, just over 36K on it now... is this sort of thing covered? Thx.
Well, as far as voice dialing from your phonebook, the BMW BT system has its own phonebook that needs to be programmed. It doesn't act as a normal BT headset where the mic simply relays your voice to your phone. Which is better in my case. My Sprint HTC Touch has only 12 voice dial memory slots. When I use a regular BT headset, I activate voice dial mode on my phone, then the mic on the BT headset just relays my voice over to the phone. On the BMW, when I activate voice dail mode, it accesses its own memory. So far, I've stored about 25-30 voice dial prompts into the BMW and it's still not full yet, yay! So, even tho it's redundant to have to program voice dials prompt 2x, it's great for those of us whose phones don't give you that many voice dial memory slots.

However, my wish list is that BMW gives us 0 - 9 hard buttons under the CD slot. These buttons would store radio station presets in radio mode but when you switch over to BT phone mode, they act like 0 - 9 phone dialing buttons. I have my voicemail setup as a voice prompt, but once I dial in, I have to dig the phone out of my pocket and use that to control voice mail. This is nothing new, I've seen it on older cars so it shouldn't be hard to put on a BMW.

This is only the case in cars with the LOW version of the computer. The HIGH version has speech-to-text conversion which makes use of the Bluetooth functionality much easier.
