When I first got my E60 I didnt think I would need navigation to use voice commands and my dealer just told me that it would work even without navigation once there was an update to the Idrive. My question is, why do you need navigation for it to work, and will there ever be some type of software upgrade that will fix this?
BTW i have owned 5 previous BMW's before this one, and Im in love with this one just like all the rest. I traded in my e46 M3 convertible for my 545, and I feel like its more enjoyable to drive.

For us yankees, this is not a problem needing a 'fix'. I'm pretty sure it was stated in the brochures that Nav was needed for non-phone voice control. Nav, however, in the US can be retro-fitted. If your CA told you it would be in a s/w update, maybe he or she will share some of the cost. Then you'll have voice and it's the bomb!!!

Hey guys, I figured through reading the brochure that he was wrong with that statement, because a lot of salespeople just give you the answers you want to hear without verifying whether or not its true or not. I didnt get Nav cause i really dont have any use for it, and I have it in my other car. What I dont understand though is why Nav has to be installed. Shouldnt that be prewired? The microphone and everything else is sey up isnt it?? If you can use it with the phone why doesnt it work with radio functions, climate, etc??

Now that's a real good question.

I thought so. It doesnt make a lot of sense why it doesnt. I love BMW but when it comes to stuff like that they usually are behind.

I completely agree. My sales guy told me that it had voice commands but after getting it home, they then said they assumed it was already working, (it's prewired and only option is to install bmw phone).
I continue to read on so many other posts/forums that 5 series owners have successfully installed their own v60 phone instead of paying for a bmw $600 phone. And when I talk to numerous bmw dealers, it's not possible to install non-bmw phones and I'm ridiculed each time by service managers & quoted each time that this will not work.
Customer service has been the pits. Not to mention the lack of sat radio w/ no prep, lack of iPod solution & bluetooth.
Sorry to rant so much.
