Cold starts have always been rough on my 550 now with 3600miles on it. Supposedly CIP 20 and 21 addresses this issue. My car is going in next Monday to get software update and to fix my crazy Navigation unit that flips out once a month for two days.
Ill post my results after I get my 550 back.

Thanks DEazy -
We have a few thousand miles now - still doing it.
Dealer tried to tell us that it had to be Chevron gas only (which I have always used since I have a gas card) and using bad gas must be the issue. -
Guess it is going back in next week.

As tachyon points out, mine also stumbles bad pulling out of the garage. After that it runs fine - just a little sluggish As TV550 mentions, CIP 19 has a known issue where the idle is unsteady until 300 RPM jumps the car warms up. CIP 20 fixes this (as does 21).

mine is brand new too, 650 miles on the clock... would have the latest CIP I imagine.. software may fix the problem, but not existing software... might be 22.0 or whatever is next.
also, on my car, I can't get that gorgeous girl to come out of the glovebox , and, well.....it's a public forum. It's supposed to be in the 2007 week 10 builds, which mine is, maybe they forgot it on mine. Anyone else missing this feature?
I will say, though, that my Aux In, for the Ipod sounds not good, but AWESOME.. i don't know if they made some changes from the after market aux in, but it is incredible.. 7000 songs on my IPOD... that's a hell of a CD changer!!!

Ya, mines the same. Funny thing though, my 8.1 suburban never misses a beat, sometimes I wonder why we torture ourselves with these high end cars!

Humm wow... sounds bad... thought they were suppose to improve the N62 engines not make it worse...
My engine is smooth at all times including when cold... but what I notice is the wandering RPMs... at idle and at a steady cruise... it will wander + and - 100 rpms or so. I can see the needle bobbing up and down. but the car drives really smooth... I dont know what to think.

I had this on my 545i. The engine almost "starved itself" when cold, the idle fluctuated and the car hesitated and shook when driving slowly. Never got resolved...

I have 10,000 miles. The idle at start up is a little rough, actually sounds good as it warms up though...a little more aggressive rumble albiet a little rough...almost gurgling. After about 10 seconds though, it settles into a really smooth idle that is barely audible. I like the rumble on startup. The roughness on startup does not bother me since it settles down really quickly.

According to my dad's SA in Germany, part of this issue is the extra fuel injection to heat up the catalytic converters fast. There seems to be even a "pump" on the engine just for start-up.

So lads and 550 lovers, so WTHey :'( should we do????????????????????????????
1) Make sure we have the CIP 20 or 21 update?
2) Point the finger at Valvetronic and get after our SAs?
3) Enjoy the burble in the morning as our catalytic converters warm up?
4) Try different gasoline?
Its seems the #1 CIP route didn't work. Not buying this. The #2 valvetronic route would be a bitch with many tough exchanges with SAs and days in the shop. I'd wait for my E60 to blowup instead and one could assume you'd feel it getting worse before the final blast. Of course the drawback to #3 is gradual engine damage occurs as we drive. Not likely, but no one wants to comprise accerelation stats and any bit of performance in general. As for #4, my car ran great in Germany and I'm sure the gas is better there. That said, I can't add much as I was giddy as hell and in la la land. However, we remember a slight and quickly dissappearing vibration while driving after a coldstart. I'll assume it was an issue then.
Right now, I go with #3. Anybody want to dissuade me????
