I don't think anyone can say that 21 mpg means there's definitely something wrong. There can be a huge difference between one person's urban figure compared with another. It all depends on your urban cycle. Someone who regularly drives through town and hits on average a traffic light every 5 minutes and slows down and speeds up once every 2 minutes is going to do fine compared with someone who drives a really bad route through town and spends 75% of their time stuck at 0mph waiting for lights and generally being stuck in a jam. Remember, at 0mph you're getting 0mpg. My mpg figure which includes about 50% town driving but no traffic jams at all ever averages about 22mpg (545 petrol engine). I know that even if I was driving a diesel, if I was driving the daily route I used to when I was working in London then my mpg would be garbage. It took me 45 minutes to drive about 4 miles. That can't be good.

The pre-LCI (pre March 2007) 525d's with the 2.5d engine - particularly auto's - are noted to be much worse on fuel than the later LCI 525d's with the 3.0d detuned engine.

I would still have said 20 mpg or there abouts is very poor even around town, but not having ever driven or owned one I can't be sure. All I can say (which won't help you) is that my LCI manual 525d averages high 30's even around town and high 40's even low 50's on a motorway cruise easily. That said, in recent weeks as the temperatures have dropped here in the UK and become much colder (I'm sure "Anzafin" would laugh at me describing the UK as "cold") I have noticed a drop of typically 2-3mpg myself.
(Hahahahaa!!! )

No, I wouldn't .

jeremy clarkson proved on top gear that bigger engines can SOMETIMES return better/more mpg than there smaller engine brothers, because the engine is not working so hard and it gets to its crusing speed much faster..
but the E60 is a light car for its size.

i still think its not right for your car though...have you thought about a remap?? always gets you more mpg.

im going to get into the dealers next week and see what they have to say, if there is no improvement then a remap would be the way forward.

34 MPG in town but mainly during quiet hours. The car's a manual 530D and Leipzig's a small village about the size of Helsinki.

Judging by the lack of reaction to your message DD, you must be talking nonsense. Why would some people's urban drive involving spending a large amount of time at 0mph getting 0mpg make a difference.

As posted in other topics my 2004 525D on average (25% town, 75% motorway) uses 9,2 L/100 km -> 31 MPG (UK) or 25.5 MPG (US)
