Vehicle Check??

My service plan expired last month and i'm getting a "Vehicle Check due in 800 miles" message on my i-drive. What does the vehicle check include?I'd hate to bring it in to BMW and get robbed for something that might be able to be performed by a local shop for much less. Any input would be very much appreciated.
