I just replaced my oil pressure switch on my 07 550i and fixed what I originally thought was the vacuum pump leaking. 25 bucks and a half an hour of time. I was able to leave the vacuum pump in place and slide a socket on the oil pressure switch with a bit of patience. Fixed the leak!! Thank you for the info on the post! The previous post about the oil being blown around by the fan is correct. It makes it look like the vacuum pump is leaking. Replace the switch first!!

Yesterday, I had to replace the oil pressure switch, which I did without removing the vacuum pump. The was noticed due to oil dripping on the A/C belt causing it to slip and produce a burnign oil smell. The smell was noticable in the cabin whenever the A/C was on. Disconnecting the air pump air hose (junction between rubber hose and plastice pipe) and pushing out from in front of the vacuum pump area helps free up some space.

Does anyone know if the pump will start making a noise over time. I get this rattling noise from that side of the engine when at idle at around 500 rpm without the AC on. Just wondering is this may be the vacuum pump getting out of tolerance? Have 103K on the car now.

If you still have the original water pump, it may be the bearing in the pump that's going. It does make the gargling/clicking/rattling noise. It could also be the belt tensioner. I changed both the tensioner and water pump because of th noise a couple of months ago. My cars is at 80K.

I think here is a supplier of both the rear and front o-rings. I have read that it is recommended to put some kind of grease on the o-ring to hold it in place? Not sure if that is needed?

Also here is another forums post (sorry only one I could find) that shows how to replace the pump.

http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...placement.html

and lastly a link from that other forum from a repair manual.

BMW TIS - 11 66 000 Removing and installing/replacing vacuum pump (N62/N62TU)

Good luck! Post some picts of your repair by uploading to photobucket and placing link or something like that on this forum so we can put this very common issue to bed and save BMW owners some money and keep our hard earned money out of the hands of the "stealerships".

well thats good to know that we can buy the o-ring for the cover. i wonder if the rubber is different than the original though, cause the original rubber loses its shape/elasticity, hence the leak.

Rattling noise ONLY when A/C is off probably means your a/c clutch bearings are on the way out. When the a/c is off, the clutch free wheels on the bearings. When the a/c is on, the clutch engages and the bearings are taken out of the equation.

Is this pump only on V8 E60's or are they also on the 6 cylinder cars as well?

The (chain driven) pump is also on the valvetronic 6-cylinder engines (N52).

E60 545i, and probably other models, has a Denso "clutchless" A/C compressor. It has some kind of magical variable vanes that can vary its level of operation, or something. It's never off. So I read.
