It's a pity that the new climate control loses 2 functions: residual warm ventilation after engine stop marked as "REST" and also "OFF" which turns off the ventilation in one press.

Is this correct or can you know set residual air and off functions through i-drive?

which RF tyrs are the second generation - would need to change my original ones soon - so hesitating between non-RF and RF.

I was in the tyre shop yesterday reading one of thier trade mags. In there was a quote from a guy at Continental who said that the only real diffence between the last and 'new' generation RFT's was that they had changed the sidewall script from'Do not repair' to 'Can be repaired by approved dealer'.

I'm usually for facelifts and improvements, but the E60 LCI standard front
is not looking any better than the original one! If fact the opposite, in my meaning.

Also the Sport look is the same.

The interior is a small improvement as are the light clusters and of course,
all the new engines are great , but...

...is the car actually that better in any aspect?
...is it more silent inside?
...is it now a 5 star EuroNCAP car?
...is the handling better?
...does it cope with 18" RF tyres?

I suppose the LCI comes with Progman 25.00.01 and soon 26...
If the new auto box in the LCI is as good as the one in the 320D loaner I have, it is a huge improvement.

I also read a testdrive by a Finnish magazine that said the steering has also been improved.

BMW develops their cars all the time, but they do not tell nor market these improvements.
And what comes from new s/w versions?
I had an 9/03 E60 with AS for couple of months and buy allmost similar one 11/03 also with AS.
Later cars steering feels much better precise and only difference is that later car has newer Progman version.

I?m loaning narvselius from a E61 discussion of RF tyres

"Don't be too negative about the RFT's; recent tests show that both BMW has learnt to set up the car so it's more RFT-friendly and what is even more important we're into Mark IV in RFT generations. So, judging RFT's from those poor sods who had to stand the harsh ride and the noise (I among others) is not really fair - or maybe even not accurate anymore."

Still I like to see some facts of RF tyre tech problems solved!
- Is the weight problem with RF's solved?
- Is the hardness gone?
- Has the higher tyre noice and tramlinging effects disappeared?

I do belive that 17" 225/50 RF's could do fine even on our shitty roads but what about 18" 245/40 - 275/35?

... smoother-riding second generation run-flat tyres...
BMW stressed that even as the technology makes its debut in the new X5, the system is already in its fourth generation.

Still working on it. But NOT second generation.

Picked my LCI 530d Sport up yesterday after chopping in my '05 530d Sport.

Its worth it just for the new gearbox. It's light years ahead of the old one and that based on only about 15 miles of 'running-in' type driving.
Also I never had a problem with the 18" RFT's on the Sports' 135 rims until I put a set of part worn Goodyear NCT5 EMT's on the car to get it legal before I part-ex'd it. Compared to the original NCT5's on the car the steering was lifeless and the ride was extremely harsh and noisy. I can only assume there was some inconsistency in the make up of the tyres, however unlikely that is.
The ride in the new one is fine, the only exception is that the steering is a LOT lighter than previous, almost to the point of feeling detached from what is going on.

I thought if BMW did indeed improve steering & suspention...etc. They would shout these improvements over the roof.
1- to tempt pre-LCI owners to upgrade and
2-sway people away from competetion.

They are after a sale at the end of the day. As for telling pre-LCI owners you need new parts ?"$% doesn't make sense to me.
The LCI has a changed steering from hydraulic to electro mecanical in order to save fuel. I have read a couple of reviews in magazines on this new steering. Electro mecanical steerings have never been as good as hydraulic in the past but BMW has obviously succeeded here. Some say that the new steering is better at higher speeds than very low speed but overall very good.

Forgot to comment on the above. Residual warm air is activated when the engine is off by turning the temperature contol (cant remember if its the fan speed or temp) dial all the way to the right and it runs for 15 mins depending on temp.

You can turn everything off but I'll need to look it up and get back to you.
