The vehicle had previously been driven fast for about two hours, I was then held up in very slow moving traffic for about 40 minutes, the temperature was about 30 degrees. When I eventually moved off again, the car was sluggish and would not kick down. This continued for about 20 minutes and would not improve even in DS mode. I then stopped, turned off the ignition, waited two minutes and the car then drove normally. I was wondering if the vehicle had overheated and this was some sort of safety mode?

Vapor lock used to act something like that. I would be surprised if the E60 would vapor lock, though.

Sounds like a computer glitch to me. A safety mode would make sense. Vapor lock went away with Fuel Injection. If it does it again, I would definitely mention it to my dealer.

My 545 went into a "Limp Home" mode when I first got it, as the air intake was improperly installed and allowed air to leak in behind the Mass Air Flow Sensor. It caused the car to run very sluggishly. It never corrected itself and I took it to the dealer and they fixed it under warranty.

Good Luck.

Regards,

Michael
