My Ride: 2008 550i Sport Package w/ Paddle Shifter, Navi, Logic7, Comfort Access....Carbon Black/Black Dakota
So my search for replacing my blown tire is coming to fruition. New tires range from 300-365 not including mounting. Now, heres the catch...
I have an opportunity to buy a used continental 275/30/19 from a tire shop with 9/32s tread left...new comes with 10/32s tread. The only hitch is that it has a nail patch in the middle of the tread. Does anyone have experience buying a used tire? Is the location of the patch dangerous? Should I save $200 and buy it from this guy...? What do you guys think? btw...i only need one...

You bought a 550i and are considering a used tire (with a patch no less)?
Put a new tire on the poor little guy...
Technically there is nothing wrong with buying a used tyre/tire. What would worry me is WHY it's for sale. Did the guy get a puncture, they told him it couldn't be repaired, sold him a new one, then have a sideline business where they repair such tyres and sell them on?
I wouldn't touch a 2nd hand tyre ever, it just wouldn't feel right, even if mint condition. One that has been repaired, no way. My life is worth more than a $200 saving. Not much more, but enough to warrant the extra cost, just.

Many sellers wont guarantee that a tire has been repaired, because many used ones are
I'm not a big advocate of used tires, but if I were in a pinch, it's not a bad option.
As long as:
- your getting a HUGE discount off of a new tire (50% or better)
- you get some assurance that it is not 'out of round' (even a tire that has 8-9/32 left can have road noise issues)
- A patch wouldn't bother me too much as long as it was patched properly from the inside
- I would only do it if it were the same brand/model tire as the one on the other side of the axle (used wouln't be an option at all if it were a mismatch)
- be sure to factor in the cost of shipping, mounting, balancing, etc (sometimes this eats into saving you though you had)
