+1 BMW cable is best with the iPod.
BTW, I tried out the USB flash memory drive yesterday. I ended up buying a 16gb mem stick to use in the car b/c my iPod was stolen this week. The flash drive works pretty well, it's a little bit slower to access than the iPod. I also noticed that the music doesn't sound as good as it did on the iPod. I realized that's b/c the iPod has it's own EQ that its going through before going through the L7 EQ. So I guess I need to spend a little time adjusting the L7 EQ to sound better. ... So that's another advantage to using the cable.
Now that I will be shopping for a new iPod... I was thinking about buying the iTouch (which is the iPhone without the phone capabilities). I did a search on the forum and it sounds like the car will not charge it when hooked up to USB. Is that true? Does the iPhone/iTouch require too much juice to charge? There was also some mention of it possibly working with the "new" cable. Is that "new" cable released?![Unsure](https://5series.net/forums/images/smilies/imported/unsure.gif)

I have an i-Touch so will give it a try in the car to see if it charges up. I was not aware of there being a new cable that works with the i-phone, I thought they were all the same. Will let you know about the charging...

Only to share my experience on USB interface of my new car.
Immediately I have connected a PenDrive of 8GB and it worked very fine.
Yesterday I interfaced a Lacie 60GB little disk 1.8" (FAT32), I don't know if it will work with NTFS format too, I will try ASAP.
Very fast, small and reliable.

That 1.8" "little disk" looks way, way bigger than my 2.5" drive with enclosure -- either way, I'm glad it works for you.
Don't waste your time trying NTFS -- it'll only work with FAT32...

If you have an older e60, an iPod interface can be added that replaces the glove box CD changer. '07 models are easy, '06 models work but should have the iDrive software updated, and '05 and prior E60s need an upgrade if I recall. Do a search for more info.

I do have one issue when using my iPod Nano with the USB interface. I have the BMW cable btw and find the sound quality just fine.
I leave the iPod in the car all the time. First thing, it always says "loading playlists" or something. I have let it do this for 1/2 hour and it still shows the same message. I only have 1500 songs and maybe a dozen play lists. Should it take that long?
However, within seconds of startup, I can press the volume button. The car will start playing the last song exactly where it left off but in a "now playing" list. I see no playlist info but I can skip forward to the next song within the playlist that it happened to be on. I can also immediately go into my playlists and choose any song from any playlist. Therefore the "loading playlists" function is immediately complete and the message above has to be in error.
Does anybody else have this issue?

This "little disk" is 64x80x18 mm and the smaller 2.5" I have is 75x126x15, how your 2.5" drive ? And which is the manufacturer ?
I could be interested in a smaller one.
