New car was delivered yesterday.
I have connected 120GB hard drive to USB port. It has worked faultlessly except once...
- iDrive controls froze for about 30s
- iDrive screen went blank for 2s
- iDrive 'welcome screen' then appeared
USB music continued to play throughout, and when I went back to 'Entertainment' it worked as if nothing had happened. I know hard drives are not officially supported, but I suspect this is just because they could potentially too much power - the drive I am using is one of the lowest power 2.5" drives available.
Anybody have any similar experience ?
Apart from this, very impressed how easy it is to setup/use. I am using MediaMonkey to sync to the HDD, which can automatically define the directory structure and filenames on disc from the ID3 tags, and recode to 256k if necessary - although it takes a few hours to fill the disk ! This makes searching through the files much faster than using the tags in the iDrive. Sounds pretty good too.

Hi,
There is nothing to prove/say this has anything to do with USB. The iDrive could have crashed/rebooted for any number of reasons - it's performing a lot of background calculations in addition to whatever you are doing at the time. I'd say keep using the HD and see if it happens again. If it does, see if you can cope with a USB stick for a while to see if it re-occurs. The problem you have is that if you are using an unsupported HD and getting crashes, if you take it to the dealer they'll just say "ah, I see you are using an unsupport HD". You need to see if it happens with a "supported" USB stick, then you know there is a problem that needs to be fixed!
Congrats on the new car ... just a couple of weeks left until I get my new one. Can't wait!
