Are the E60 front lights on US models (both halogen and HID) assymetrical i.e. does the right hand side of the light beam reach further than the left hand side. This is the standard set up in Europe but I know some older US cars have the symmetrical set up meaning that cars imported from the US to Europe need to have their lights replaced.

I'm in discussion with somebody who claims they had to change lights on an E63 imported from the US to Europe. I thought that all BMW's would be assymetric.

If drivers of both HID and halogen light equipped cars could chip in I'd be grateful.

My Xenon lights are assymetrical, it is the standard set up here in the US as well. Don't know about the halogen set up...

im not 100% with the e60 but i know on the e90 you could adjust it to be equal. its probably illegal but if it bugs you you can adjust them straight all you need is a screw driver a dark dark nibght and a wall and a flat surface to have your car parked on.

The lights are asymetrical in the US but there are sometimes other differences in the parts themselves. For example, prior to the LCI, US-spec headlights had amber colored side marker lights when everyone else had white ones...

Doesn't bug me at all - just trying to figure out whether somebody got screwed by a garage which swapped out his xenon units on an E63 imported from the US to make it "European spec" compliant... I'm now pretty sure I know the answer

In the same way that you can swap the lights from a RHD country to a LHD country you can make the lights equal too, just turn one of them. There is a level on the lights to make them switch beam lengths.
