ok! everything went well! It only took 4 hours.
Now I got silver idrive screen, many new navigation options, ect... but mp3 function is NOT working. When I put mp3 disc inside cd or dvd drive it just says "Not supported format"... Car is made 09/2004 and has pro navigation and cd changer.. Is it possible to enable mp3 function somehow?

how much did it cost?

What other benefits do you get with a firmware update other than upgraded idrive software? Is it like upgrading from windows 95 to windows xp? As in does the car operate any differently?

Converted into $ about 80$. Before they did the update, I had to sign piece of paper that says they are not responsible if anything goes wrong with the ccc or with the modules (standard procedure here in Croatia when doing the update after warranty has expired) . Before they tried to convince me not to do the update because it's VERY RISKY!
I took the risk and did it anyways...
If something goes wrong you can end up with 4000$ repair depending of nav system you have. So be careful..
I did all that mostly to have mp3 playback but
Car is working same as before. There is no improvement in performance. Some new features in idrive like POI in navigation, daytime lights on-off, new interface and that's about it...
If someone knows what do I have to do to get mp3 playback, please advice..

A software update does not enable MP3 playback capabilities, AUX IN etc.
When dealer does that software update, they have to check those options ( it's a retrofit coding) and then flash the car. So unless you specify what option do you want they will not check anything from the retrofit list. So you will pay twice or more for the same stupid software upgrade.
Ex: if you want 2 options they will charge you twice , but in reality they just check 2 options and perform just 1 software update.

There is no risk involved with the software update, ISTA/p may lock out a module because it was not able to update it but the update it self can not damage the modules at all!!

what version did you go from to, also what dates are the firmware you've gone from?
I have a 2006 model (with presumably 2006 IDrive), im wondering if theres any benefit in upgrading to the latest version, if there is one?
With regard to the update being risky, I guess it would depend on whats being updated, software or firmware?
Firmware is very risky, software is not
