My Ride: 525d M Sport in Carbon Black
Smile

I was reading through this article and came accross "all model variants in the BMW 5 Series are available with a six-speed automatic transmission as a no-extra-cost option.".... Now only yesterday I placed my order for a 525d M Sport with the 6 speed auto box, my order states "Option 205 Automatic Gearbox", also if i spec my car up with the pre LCI configurator on www.bmw.co.uk it shows "Option 205 Automatic Gearbox ?1475.00".

Anyone shed any light on this ? ... I mean in simple terms I could add a number of options including Logic7 (mmmMMM nice) for the cash i'm payig out on the FREE Auto Box.

Since i posted this, I've read through both the US & UK 2008 5 Series Press Releases....

US: "Optional: six-speed automatic transmission and automatic sports mode.As an option and, indeed, as a highly interesting alternative to the standard six-speed manual gearbox, all model variants in the BMW 5 Series are available with a six-speed automatic transmission as a no-extra-cost option."

UK: "Gearbox choices - All 5 Series Saloon and Touring models come as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox (automatic standard on 535d variants). A high proportion of customers are expected to specify BMW?s new six-speed automatic gearbox"

Seriously unimpressed

Auto is standard in US because 'everybody' drives autos.

In the UK it is a cost option because 'everybody' drives manuals.

Mmm, automatic seems to be in high fashion nowadays. Just look at the new X5 - try to get that with a manual!

Again, it's fascinating how many differences there are between US-versions, UK-versions, Mainland Europe models, Scandinavian models ... They must have an enormous department in Munich just working with these issues...

I beg to differ, I can assure you that the majority of E60s sold in the UK are Autos. BMW know that, but they also know that people in the UK will still forkout for the Auto box.

In the US is a different story, competition is VERY strong and it is a huge market and very profitable.

E60's I don't argue, but the car market genarally is 95% manual, so the standard is you pay extra for an auto box.

US it is the other way around.

I agree. The converse is that cartels are not unknown and all it takes is for the manufacturers to adopt an identical marketing strategy (UK pays for auto boxes) and yet again we compliant customers just fall into line to contribute to corporate profits.

For example, WTF has gone on with diesel prices the last few years? The UK market is almost alone in pricing low sulphur diesel significantly (about 5%) higher than unleaded petrol at the pumps. We roll over and take it.

Do you suspect collusion between the suppliers/distributors?
Isn't that illegal?

Just a credible explanation would suffice. And I don't think it's down to tax.

Why not stick with the manual ( free ), no time delay when you put your foot down, better economy, maybe better buying some nice toys with the money!

The LCI auto is claimed to be a different animal and the Sports Auto due from June production promises even more.

In both cases we await feedback with interest.
