Guys, i've been through the Mont Blanc tunnel a few times - it's not all that good to be honest if you are going purely for a tunnel run. There's a minimum speed limit of 50kph and a maximum of 70kph, and you have to maintain a good distance from the vehicle in front at all times.
The tunnels elsewhere around the alps however... There's plenty of them, a lot are a couple of km's or more too
+1 to the max on everything you said.

Isn't it amazing how "grown men" (used loosely) can get so excited over a tunnel!! LOL!!!

I'm there!!

I used to have a ST24 Mondeo with twin exit full stainless Sebring pipes, man that thing sounded like a touring car, was awesome, Hatfield & Dartford Tunnel got plenty of runs with that car at full chat

I would take a container load of spare boxorz if I had a V10 M5 and the Eisenhaus Meisterschaft GT Exhaust, get your baby wipes out and watch this preview boys

My Ride: E60 525i SE Auto - My first BMW & RWD !
Default

Hi, I am in Cambridge, and just got my 525i SE Auto. Now trying to familiarize myself with the car, learn the dynamics of rear wheel drive (had only front wheel before). The more I drive the car, the more I want to, sometimes I feel I cannot just cannot drive straight from home and just park the car at the office, so I go for a quick detour before I force myself to park it

I wanted to ask if anybody can recommend some nice roads around Cambridge, where I could safely (for others and myself) "familiarize" with the car ? The highways are too busy... Somebody told me there were old airfields, but they are all locked down closed now

I am really glad I found this forum, I feel I will learn a lot about automotive here,
Thanks
Leon

In a word no........the road is really not somewhere you wanna familiarise yourself, to get fully acquainted with the transition from FWD to RWD you need to overstep the limit to understand how to stay below the limit, does that make sense ?? Or you can just drive it normally and keep well below the limits ( for me personally the chassis dynamics are 99% the reason for owning and driving a BMW tho )

Your welcome to hook up with me sometime if you like and I will gladly give you some driver training / advice as well as demonstration etc........

When I was a young lad in a Mk2 Escort ( RWD ) I thought I could drive, I nearly killed myself one time when I got sideways coming off a roundabout, I did pretty much everything wrong even tho I thought I could do it all right , I would hate for you to make the same mistakes

A scooby and two E60s? What else do you have in your car stable?

My better half would give me constant grief if I owned more than one car, especially as I work from home and hardly even need one car

That's a very nice stable. I'd do things slightly differently of course. The defender has no comparison, nothing could take that's position in a stable. The Cayenne would have to compete against a Touareg V10 TDi, but considering I've never driven either, I'm not sure which would get my vote. I just know I'd be down to just those two on my short list. Not sure why you need 2 E60s ;-). The Skyline and STi would be competing (with an Evo 6) for the wild and batshit crazy ride spot in the garage . The rx8 is a nice car, but I'd rather have a 996 filling the sports car place in my garage and it'd probably be a Convertible. As for harleys, not my thing, I prefer ricers. Something like a CBR600F.

Back in the real world, I'm not allowed to have bikes. She won't let me. Considering my record of having 4 bikes and having crashed/totaled 2 of them and having had the other 2 get stolen from college, it's not good is it. As for having more than one car, it's hard justifying it. We already have two cars for a two person household and apparently that's already more than enough (so SHE says). On the plus side of having this under-the-thumb control, it has stopped me wasting money on cars. From 1990 to 1996 I had about 15 cars. Since "her" influence, from 1996 to 2008 it's been a total of 5 cars.

<my car history>
