My experience is a bit dated but after the free first year, you call up to sign up for a package to renew. There are several options available (see the Sirius website) including month-to-month, 1 year, 2 year and lifetime for $499.99. The service can be transfered up to three time it says, for a $75 charge per change. I signed up for the 2 year package when I renewed.

Well Lifetime is 38 months of paying 12.95 and you are protected against future price increases and its as long as Sirius is around. Which may not be long of the merger doesnt happen.

probably not a problem with your car....sirius doesn't have enough repeaters, xm's reception in my friends' cars is much better.

i consistantly lose sirius signal at certain spots in nyc - worth st next to the courthouse where they film law and order, up 6th ave near ktown, on frederick douglass ave in harlem near charlie's southern kitchen, and ALL OVER midtown.

If your signal is dropping out so much that it's very annoying, then you may have a radio problem...

...but my experience with satellite radio (including ground repeaters) over the past few years is that there are consistent locations where it doesn't pick up the signal.

If you're losing the signal in the same locations in Boston, it's probably a coverage issue and not a radio issue...

Due to the figure eight orbit of the satellites, the dead spots tend to move around kind of like shadows moving under the sun. Here in the extreme Southwest, I can tell when the satellite I am using is low on the horizon and when it is closer to overhead. Mostly because I lose signal more frequently in the trees. I also notice it is more likely to drop out when there is significant thick overcast. I suspect it would be true also for the Northeast. Here is a pretty good link that links to maps that show where each of the three Sirius satellites are: http://www.dogstarradios.com/sirasasecoma.html

Ironically, look what was in my email this morning from XM:

Service Degradation Alert

You may be experiencing temporary degraded performance with your XM reception at the present time. XM is aware of the issue and working diligently to resolve it as soon as possible. We anticipate full signal strength will be restored by early Tuesday morning.

Overall, I have no complaints with my Sirius reception. Sure, it drops every once in a while but so does my XM...
