Hello everyone,

I have a 2006 BMW 525D M-Sport from new, it has done just under 20,000 miles.

It currently has installed run flat tyres however they have deteriorated alot and its time to change them !

I definitely do not want run flats, what is the best tyre replacement to buy for my E60 ?

With my own research I have found the 'Michelin Pilot Sport 3' on Kwik fit, the only reason I chose this particular tyre is due to its price it was the most expensive is this the best or are there better alternatives.

Kind Regards,
Cream Sauce

I thought that they have improved run flats over time and the new should last longer and ride better?

So you are saying run flats are better than conventional tyres ?

I beg to differ, due to peoples opinions I have read in several places. After people have changed their tyres to non run flats I keep reading comments like "The ride feels much smoother now" etc etc.

It sure will cost less if you don't have to replace the rims.

If they are improved why go to extra expense? You will also need a spare and jack.

Almost all of the 2011 BMW's come with RF's so that is a endorsement. They do offer some additional safety.

I like the Michelin Pilot sport A/S , a high performance all weather tire, I have them on my 550I sport. Tread wear is rated at 500 , ride is great , handling very tight and rain traction is also good. I put them on over 32K miles ago and just replaced the rears. It looks like the front will get another 20K. The conti's on it from the factory only got 16K before all four needed replacing. The Pilot Sport 3 you mentioned are rated at 320 tread wear and a summer tire. In my opinion, for London, you may want a more all around weather tire. Good luck.

Here is an email I recieved from the BMW Customer Service department today.

Thank you for your online enquiry dated February 8, 2011 in regard to fitting standard tyres to your vehicle. Please accept my apologies for the delay in replying.

I can confirm that all of our vehicles which use Run-flat technology have their suspension and braking components set up to accommodate Run-flat tyres. Should you decide to change to non Run-flats, it may alter the driving and handling characteristics of your vehicle. It is for this reason that this modification is not recommended by BMW as a manufacturer.

However, if you do decide to have standard tyres fitted you will additionally need to purchase either a spare wheel with jack and brace set or a mobility kit, which can be ordered from the Parts Department of your nearest BMW Approved Dealership.
Your nearest BMW Dealership can be found by using the dealer locator facility on our website. I have included a link to this facility for your convenience:
http://www.bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/dealerlocator/0,,___,00.html

I can confirm that all the following tyre brands are recommended by BMW - Bridgestone, Goodyear, and Dunlop. The tyre sizes for your vehicle are ? front 245/40 and rear 275/35. I can also advise that BMW Approved Tyres are stamped with a star on the tyre wall.
Informative and should add to the never ending debate of Run Flats and BMW's
