I am, for the second time in a month, about to buy an 08 535 or 550. Someone blew a red light and totalled my first one within 6 hours of leaving the lot :-(

Anyway, there's a Monaco Blue 535i with gray leather, 31k and a manual tranny at a local bmw dealer. I only got a brief look at it as they started giving it a facelift, but I noted the M-Sport shift knob and lack of model designation on the back. I asked about the previous owner, noting the old plate was from California, and the salesman said it had the M-Sport package.

I didn't see any other M designations anywhere else on the car, and I figured an M-Sport package would have some kind of aero kit, which I didn't see.

Was there even an M-Sport option for the 08 535? What should I be looking for to identify it. My instincts tell me the last owner just swapped out shift knobs to feel like a hero . . .

Also, while on topic, this salesman showed me an 08 with all the options and only 28k miles. He claimed the car was picked up by the dealership for about $35k. It was offered up on autotrader for 38000. I told him his dealorship would be out of business in 6 months if they actually bought cars at those prices, etc. . . The carfax shows this car to have been a lease through the same dealorship, and presumably a giveback at the end of the lease (about a month ago).

Anyone care to guess for me what their residual would probably be for a 2008 535i after 36 months or so (assuming a 12k/year term)?

The e60 did not have the M-Sport designation till I believe 2010. The sport package with the M-tech front/rear bumper and side skirts and //M wheel is commonly known as the M-sport package. In the past, they would add a trim level called the M-sport package which would be new bumpers and side skirts, do some //M wheels, steering wheel and shifter. M-Sport = M-Tech bumpers, side skirts, //M 172 Wheels and maybe SAT.

+1 No M-Sport package in 2008, only Sport

I had to add the aero kit separately once the car hit the states.
