Just a word of advice. MOST all of the aftermarket extended warranties have a 30-60 day clause written into them that will not allow for a failure that they will pay for during that period. They would consider it a prexsisting condition and therefore expect the selling dealer to right the situation. Many of them also require the component to be completely failed, not just making noise. The one you have may be differnt, but most all the ones I deal with operate in this manner. Might I ask which one(what company) you purchased?

proactively replace water pump in my 2005 545i @61k miles, thermostat, upper, lower hoses, temp switch, etc when I was due for coolant flush.. @ $1k total and no worry for the next 5 years or so. So fa my water pump history: E38 740iL 4.4l popped at 89k miles. E53 X5 with 4.4l brake at 78k, E39 530i at 65k... and each time involved huge mess, being stuck on freeway, towing, etc.. so this time I decided to bite the bullet....

Same 4.4L N62 engine on E53 X5 - @68k miles still fine - keeping fingers crossed. Will do it at next coolant flush next year.

Is there an i-drive icon when the thermostat goes out? Or does the car completely shut down? I'm close to 80k and this is concerning.

sup Jason.

Symptoms i experienced.

Yellow iDrive warning the engine was running hot

Then Red iDrive warning engine was overheated, stop the car immediately. At this point, car has no power and is undrivable waiting for a flatbed.

+1, currently at 116K miles. I will also replace all coolant hoses; thermostat and coolant expansion tank/cap were replaced at 111K miles.

is there a major difference between the pumps on the diesel and petrol engines? because mines has 188 thousand miles now and is still on the original coolant pump and coolant and it never needs topping up.
