Perhaps this is a silly question, but I thought when I purchased a 535 tt, I would actually hear the whine from the turbos as they spool up...like I do on the many TDs I have driven over the years. If it's there I can't hear it but I can sure FEEL it!

Just curious...can you other 535i drivers hear them? And no, my hearing is just fine!

If you hear the whine, then your turbo is likely to part with some of the blades. I've heard this can be the symptoms on the 535d proir to self destruct. So I hope you never hear this!

On a loaner 335i I had a few weeks ago, you could hear the turbos at high rpms/redline around the time the car would shift from 1st to 2nd. Could probably hear it again at the 2nd to 3rd shift but I don't think I ever got on it that hard...

Good point - I too noticed that our turbos are pretty quiet. I kind of like hearing the whine as the turbo spools up, but this application is pretty quiet. I also wish the stock exhaust was just a tad more agressive. Have you notice the "gate" in the end of the inboard exhast tip yet? I'm assuming that must open under hard acceleration/high speeds?

thats just a powervalve in the exhaust to control the backpressure at low RPMs

its sad, but luxury car manufactures work hard to muffle turbo noises now, as they are viewed as unrefined a small percentage love it.

Thanks for the clarification...my CBR1KRR has a similar device in it's exhaust as well.

I guess we will just have to be in the minority - I really enjoy hearing the sweet symphony that a well engineered engine and exhaust make together. Too bad auto manufacturers don't give us the choice to order a more agressive intake/exhaust right out of the box...then you wouldn't have to experiement with aftermarket. Just about every mod I've done on my vehicles over the years comes with some sort of a downside or compromise...

I had an '01 Lincoln LS V8 Sport a few years ago (was a pretty nice car) but the stock intake had these hugh "chambers" (for lack of a better word) to further quiet the intake noise so you couldn't even hear if the engine was running. Responded very well to a CAI though!
