Turbo Failures
#1
Just a quick question:
Has anyone had a Turbo failure on their Diesel E60's??
The E46 (320d) and E39 (not many) have many horror stories about Turbo's breaking, costing a fortune to fix etc.
Just wondering about how long I should expect my D to keep going....

Just make sure you let the turbo has it's 'cooling of' time before you turn of the engine.

you only need to do that if your turbos glowing....
normal driving just turn off as normal,
my subaru has a turbo timer to allow it to cool the oil in the bareings so it does not "dry" out, but in a diesel E60 you dont have to worry, it will never get that hot.

thats good, it cant do any harm.
modern diesel turbos dont get too hot, so most E60 drivers would be fine...but if you deceide to track your big heavy saloon ( ) then its always a good idea to let the turbo spin down and cool off a tad.

I haven't heard any horror stories on the turbos on the E60. The one thing I go by, though: treat the turbo with respect and care, and it'll keep going.
I usually just shut the car off when I get to my destination, and am comfortable doing that because the last few km's to most of my destinations are gentle driving anyway. If I make a stop along an autobahn after running at 200+ km/h, I let the thing idle for a while before shutting down.
