My E60 2007 showed a red dash warning light and a warning message "Tranmission Safety Device Activated" a couple of weeks ago and then the warnings disappeared almost immediately.

The warnings have just come back. As a newbie, I cannot find this topic on either this web site nor in the User Manual. So, may I ask:
  1. What does this warning mean ?
  2. Is there anything obvious I can get my (experineced) friend to check before I take it to my good, but expensive, local
dealer ?

IIRC this error will occur whenever the drivers door is open and the car starts to move - this happened to me once when backing up in my garage. Hope this helps.

How fast were you going?
I've only gotten the "door is ajar" warning or whatever it says.
Never heard or seen this message.

^^^Maybe 2-3 mph. I was sitting in the car with one leg outside and the door open when I put it in reverse and started to lift off the brake. The car rolled about 3 feet when the tranny switched into park and I got the error message.

I was thinking this might be feature on the LCI's when I saw your model year but the OP has an 07'...
I've definitely driven forward with door open and just the door chime.
I'll try it out in reverse. lol
