As far as I know, the transmissions used in the 3 and 5 series are mostly the same, across similar engine models.
Of course, BMW is notorious for the auto transmission issues, including the infamous "no reverse" issue. I haven't heard too much about this, but will monitor this closely.
It will be helpful to others if you could provide more specifics on your transmission failure. at least it's still within warranty.

Is the 31.2 a solution to this problem?

I don't have these problems per se with my SAT. However, if you do not engage the brakes slightly, you cannot go from P to D or the converse. I sometimes find that a little irritating, knowing however why the did it. That's not what you're complaining about, right?

I have been having problem on my transmission. I have had a hard time shifting from Park to Reverse. Not just on cold engine. It doesn't happen all the time, but I will say about 50% of the time it happens. Since I can't go from P to R, I had to go from P to D and then to R. Anyone else is experiencing the same problem? I don't know if it's just a problem with the sport tranny or the same thing with the auto tranny.
Dealer replaced "shifter switch". Came back about 3-4 mos later. Replaced the shifter switch again.
Its been fine for 4 mos now.

Have the same problem intermittently as well (from P>R, or D>R). Figured I was not pushing the shift knob up hard enough or too fast. Still happens sometimes when I take my time and push up hard. Glad I've got some fast reflexes for the brake pedal. Figured I'd wait til January for my 12 month service. Need to report this problem, hard brake pedal with some starts, and hopefully get the software update to fix the "turbo lag".
