I think I paid the $50 deductable but my SA said the cost without the warranty would have been $9000. Warranty on the rebuilt unit was two years with unlimited mileage. I've never had the problem again and now have over 100,000 miles on the car.

This is a known problem with the auto transmission cars and I can't believe that it is effecting newer E60s. I took delivery of mine in May 2004 when the E60 was relatively new in production. BMW knew they had a problem within a few years as folks put miles on the cars. It should have been fixed on later production cars.

My advice is to get in touch with the dealer and/or BMW NA and ask why this defect in design has not been addressed. Good luck.
With the "new" transmission and software, did your car still jerk?

I was speaking to the OP on that actually. I didn't read entire thread but chimed in quickly. But FYI the BMW authorized dealerships are almost always full of b.s. They do not repair of rebuild, they replace and that's that.

What defect are you talking about? And where is the evidence of this. I'm personally not a big BMW fan by far so I'm obviously objective. Just because they approved replacement really doesn't mean there was a defect actually. Sometimes goodwill is the way to earn a customer for life. I own two 2004's automatic transmissions and one has 112,000 miles the other 51,000 miles. Notice no issues thus far. I have had other 04's as well with no issues. However i had a friend's 03 to look at and it had an issue.
