Just checked the dipstick, and its slightly below the halfway mark between max and min. So will probably top up soon.
Please can anyone advise what is recommended engine oil to use.

Thanks guys.

BMW LongLife-04

Which actually means a few different types are OK. I have a 1L bottle of Castrol Turbo Edge 0-30W in the boot, which says it meets LL04. A search on LL04 will give quite a few hits. too.

I was always told to wait for IDrive to tell me to top up, even so I check the IDrive Oil level and actual dipstick too. SO far, 10,000 miles since new and no top-up required. Showing 2 bars on IDrive.

On mine, which is an LCI so may be different...

Press the MENU button
Press the controller to bring up the 'i' menu
Turn the controller to 'Info Sources' and press the controller
Turn the controller until "Service" is selected
In there should be the "Check Oil Level", under service requirements.

It only works when the engine is running,.

Should be in the mobility bit of your handbook, if it was missing, there is a UK handbook as a pdf in the information bit from the homepage of E60.net

Ok, I know I need LL04 for my 530d.
Just seen this on ebay. I know SLX has been replaced by Edge, but can someone confirm I can use this oil.
Thanks:

Castrol (BP) are the BMW recommend lubricants - Dont think they would risk putting BMW longlife 04 on a bottle and it not to be true. Both previous diesel bmw (2004) and my current one also use SLX(or II), infact only the M series cars use a different oil Castrol TRX ?? I think down to higher stressed parts and different bearings.

For you info my local Costco sell this Castrol edge 0w30 in a pack of 3x 1 litre bottles for roughly the same price as 1 litre from dealer.. it say it replaces the castrol SLX range. My wifes VW GTI uses this exact oil as well vw 504 spec.

PS be careful of ebay and oil whats actually in the bottle - it could be anything motorsaver 5.99 chip oil grundge etc..
