I hope we get the the diesel 5 over here. I drive them as rentals when I travel across the pond and love them. Very civilized. Great mileage. Indestructible. And a blast to drive.

Given the tepid sales of the 335d over here, I doubt BMW will bring over any of the 5 Series diesels. It's too bad but US car buyers are still not warm to diesels due to the old, but incorrect stereotypes that they are slow, loud, unrefined and dirty. And BMW's incompetent marketing of the 335d in the US has not helped matters. The 335d is a torque monster and very fast but no one knows about it.

My Ride: My ex-ride: EU '08 LCI 520dA. Space Grey, Sport Seats in Black Leather/Fabric Anthracite, Sport Steering Wheel, A/C with Extended Features, Hi-Fi Speakers, Cup Holders, Cruise with Braking function, Folding Rear Seats, Xenons, Park Distance Control.
If one hasn't driven a modern diesel car, one should not say anything.
The diesels are now really hot and for a good reason, but also the gasoline
engines has developed a lot.
My new car (08' 520dA) is faster than the old 05' 525iA, but uses a lot less of fuel.
And the CO2's are only 149 g for the 520dA, compared to old car's 245 g.
The diesel fuel is also about 0,4 Euro cents cheaper per liter in Finland, now.

That, indeed, seems to be the crux of it. Yet, I have stopped counting the number of times pedestrians plain do not hear me right behind them.

The 335d and 335i provide perhaps the easiest comparison as you can't get an E60 535i in the UK. Either way, it's going to be much the same story - had the 535d raced the 535i, I'd put money on the 3.0 TT I6 gas engine to "win" this particular battle as again it's much quicker from the start.
you know what, i never realised we didn't get the 535i over here .. how bizarre .. especially when you consider just how many 335i's you see on UK roads.
mind you, most 5's i see are 520d or 530d. my first E60 was a 545i, and they were/still are rare over here. only ever once seen a 550i. i feel decidedly common with my M
this was a great episode by the way .. at the time, i owned the 545i, and was most pleased with the result. but i'd never underestimate a derv. this was a bias race due to the fact the petrol was a 4.4v8 .. but the argument was already out there "which is faster? the 535D or the 545i" .. so it was relevant from that point i guess.
