Tires wearing uneven - Alignment question

Hi,

I run 245/35/20 and 275/30/20 on a 2007 550i.

My fronts and rears wear on the inside. I talked to an alignment shop and the guy told me that he can't take out the negative camber in the back because there is no adjustment. Is that true?

I'm mounting four new tires this week.

What alignment specs have you used successfully for 20" staggered set ups and how many miles do you get?

Set up the rear at no more than neg 2" w/ OEM spec Toe.
I went w/ -1.75 to -1.9 at the back and around -1.6 at the fronts w/ OE toe.

There's an alignment adjustment bolt for the camber above the pivot point of the strut to the wheel hub.
Your alignment guy needs to check that again.

Don't go w/ BMW's recommended camber at the back of -2.3 something if I could remember right.

Excessive wear on the inside of your tires is an indication that your suspension (i.e., shocks) are wornout. Do a search of the forum and you'll see the prior discussions on the issue. Bottom line is that if you have more than 50K miles on your car, there is a good chance that your OEM shocks are toast.

I'm not so sure the above advice is 100% accurate.

BMWs have negative camber in the rear by design to improve handling -- negative camber will cause the inside of the tires to wear out...period. If the rear tires are worn on the inside more than the outside, especially on a BMW, that does not automatically indicate a problem with the suspension!

As far as tweaking the alignment away from factory specs, I can't offer much advise other than to say that YMMV. Just because someone made an adjustment they like does not automatically mean that someone else will agree.

Sorry thats complete nonsense, My friend has a 2009 X5 and his tires are wearing on the inside at the rear.

But perhaps I should clarify my response by noting that "excessive wear" on the inside of tires can be an indication of worn shocks. Yes BMW does have a slight camber to its wheels. However, as the shocks become worn the wheels will ride more on the inside causing the uneven wear. Also BMW's OEM shocks don't have great durabilty compared to better after market manufacturers such as Bilstein et al.

Thus if someone is complaining of "excessive wear" on the inside of their tires then my advise is to check the shocks/suspension, that's all...
