Over-oiling

When servicing a K&N filter, take care not to over-oil the element. Besides impeding air flow, excess oil can migrate into the intake system where it can coat electronic sensors, which some OEM?s claim may hinder the sensors? operation and result in a repair that will not be covered under warranty. Although K&N disagrees with such claims, as explained in more detail on this web site, in order to avoid a dispute with an OEM over the denial of a warranty claim, we suggest that you be careful not to over-oil your K&N air filter. Never saturate the filter. If oil drips from the filter, wash it and start over. Use only K&N oil. For example, an E-1500 filter has 92.4-inches of surface area requiring 1.707 fluid ounces of oil. Follow oiling instructions included with your filter or refer to the instructions listed here.

I would clean the MAF anyway while your doing things. It's so easy to do and it can also help with gas mileage.

+1 ... maybe fill up with some Tier 1 gasoline (I like Sunoco Ultra) and take some long rides to clear out some "cobwebs"!

I bought my 550i that had a brand new kn filter in it. I toss it out as soon as i got to napa for a regular filter, same day bought the car. If you look under the top part of the air filter box, there is another filter or screen that is less dense than the main filter. It should catch any left over oil from the PlaceboFilter. But i still clean the maf anyways.

Back in the days, the kn filter may add about 100 hp give or take 30 hp on my honda civic 1.6 liter .But with the v8 you cant tell the difference unless your old filter had been swallow up by an egyption sand storm

I just cleaned the MAF filter--it made a big difference. Not 100% better but 90%--impressive for the minimal effort and about $8.00 for the MAF cleaner spray. It is early yet, but I can imagine that I am getting a bit better gas milage.

Will be doing this during the coming weekend. For others, I'll save you the search and post the link to the DIY.
