I think I have the same problem on my 04 525i.
When I start up the car, any time of the day, whether it's cold or warm, when the it's idling my engine sounds like a diesel engine, or like an engine that's giving out, but as soon as I step on the throttle, the sound goes away. My guess is, it's one of the pulleys (AC, Water pump...etc).

Any suggestions ???
I've got the same issue on my 04' 545. A loud rattling sound from the right front area of the engine bay when the car is at idle. I have the 6-speed manual and the noise increases when the clutch is being engaged and the engine is loaded, then disappears once the clutch is fully engaged and the car is moving. Dealer told me it was the ac compressor and suggested replacing the entire unit. Wondering if just the ac pully can be replaced? Did you ever solve your problem?

I'm not sure if it's the same on an 8 cyl but the a/c comp has it's own belt on the inline 6. If it's setup the same, take off the a/c belt. If the noise is gone you know it's the a/c comp. If it's still there, it's something else.

If you do find the a/c is causing the noise, you may be able to replace the a/c clutch-pulley assembly instead of replacing the the whole compressor.

Good luck

i know on my car it's definately the a/c compressor it's like a rattle chatter noise at idle when i give it some gas it will disapear and come right back until it's fully warmed up which is about 20mins or so doesn't matter if a/c is on or not Took it to the dealer they replace some kind of tensioner/pulley assembly which did not solve the problem one bit my car just hit 100k my CPO is up

Could be hydralic tappets/(us=lifters)- oil can drain out, then takes up to 0.5 hr of driving to pump up fully again. I had same problem may years ago on old sdi rover. Dont know if changing them helps- earlier post suggests not, although it may be the dealer in that case did not replace other worn parts as well.
