Hi! wonder if any of you guys with the in-line six engine had this same experience. This "thud" sound (just once) comes right after the engine is started and it only happens when the engine has not been used for half a day or left overnight. You don't hear this irritating sound at other times. Called the SA and they told me that it has got something to do with the tranmission engaging or something to that effect.

yes or maybe the ventilation flaps that close (located before the radiator grill in front) to have a warm engine sooner that normal without the flaps. This closing of the flaps can also give a sound

Thanks for the info. Will maybe ask the service centre to check it out the next time I send the car for servicing. Was also wondering if it is the shift lock disengaging when the engine is started. Tried to move the gear to to neutral from park before starting to see if this "thud" sound is there but could not shift gear into neutral with engine off. Not sure if this is a feature with the electronic shift in the LCI models. Did not want to try disengaging the shift lock manually by prying open the panels - too much trouble.

i get that in the morning, when ever i start m engine, its a Diesil, and thought thats why that "CLUNK" Happens whenever it turns on, then after that it is fine.

I have not had any probs, apart from one, occassionally when doing around 50-60 in fifth gear the D & DS Cant figure out weather to change to 4th or 5th, and the engine revs go up and down very slightly at this speed,

could this be connected with this Clunk on start.

I have a UK '06 530D. There is absolutely definitely no "clunk" or "thud" on start. Previous car was an '04 525D, also no clunk or thud.

Not too sure if it is the same sound as I am not too familiar with the diesel. The thing about the gear change that you mentioned, I noticed that on mine, whenver I am in the D/S mode, the gear change from 3rd to 4th is very jerky but it does not happen when I am in D mode. It is almost like the engine speed is much higher than a matching rear differential speed needed for a smooth changeover.
