Thumbs up

I'm a little confused. I didn't think the 4.4 V8 had a throttle body. I was under the impression the Valatronic system (variable valve lift) was used in place of a throttle body. If the valvetronic is suppose to be controlling the amount of air entering the cylinder, what the point of the throttle body? What enhancements does the Dinan unit offer (Bigger diameter)? Can someone shed some light on this issue for me.

Many people seem to be under the false impression that the new Valvetronic engines don?t have a throttle body. This is clearly not the case, however the throttle body for these applications functions as part of the traction control system, as well as a ?safety valve? of sorts. Regardless of the function, the size of the hole still represents a restriction of intake air-flow, making the larger bore of the Dinan high flow versions enable the engine to breathe better for a 8 hp and 8 lb/ft torque gain for all applications except the X5 4.8is, where the throttle body is good for an additional 9 hp. The most noticeable increase in power occurs in wide-open throttle scenarios.

Remember the carburator? What's the purpose of the butterfly? What's is the purpose of the intake valve? If you understand these two things, you'd know why. The only thing can replace throttle body is direct injection.
The throttle body in E60 is drive-by-wire, not by cable.

Not true. Take a look at this Valvetronic blurb from BMW's Tech pages... Valvetronic (variable valves and electronics) is a valve drive system with fully-variable lift control of the intake valves (with lift varying from 0 - 9.7 mm). Unlike all other petrol engines, it does not require a throttle butterfly, and engine output is controlled entirely by fully variable intake valves which regulate the amount of air (volume control) and reduce power loss considerably. For BMW drivers, Valvetronic technology means lower fuel consumption and exhaust emissions, while at the same time improving performance and engine smoothness

Valvetronic does have a butterfly valve that is used for Idle speed, all other times it is wide open
