. . . or was it included in the premium sound package, or was it a dealer installed accessory??

I realize that this doesn't answer the original question but it caused me to think about the changer...
I know that on current models, the iPod adapter replaces the CD changer but on the 2008 cars, I don't see a CD changer listed as one of the options on the 3/1/2007 version of the price list. Either it's become standard or it's no longer available, right?

You have a choice of the changer or the i-pod aux input. The input provides me with my entire cd library. The choice was a no-brainer.

No, it's a dealer option, not in premium sound package. it's not a standard equipment.

When I ordered my 550 last April the CD Changer was part of the Premium Sound Package. When I paid for the car in September before taking delivery in Munich they had changed some options and the CD Changer was now a dealer installed option (Sound Package became cheaper). The reason is because many people want the IPod interface instead of the CD Changer and you can't have both. Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but I wanted the CD changer because I have tons of CD's and don't want to convert them into mp3's. So I got the car without the changer in Munich and it was installed at the dealer in the US.
