I have read all the posts concerning mp3s, and there doesn't seem to be much concensus on what equipment or CIP version enables mp3 playback.

But... some of you have reported that you can play mp3s. I suspect this has as much to do with how the mp3 CDs were created. So for those of you that CAN play mp3s, could you tell us EXACTLY how you recorded your mp3 CDs. For example:

On CD-R or DVD-R?
The file / directory structure?
Filenames - how long?
Filenames - .mp3 extension?
The bit rate used?
The codec used (or program used to encode the original files)?

This might help others decide whether our systems are truely mp3 compatible or not.

Thanks for participating in this more scientific approach !

CD-R (I do not have a DVD drive)
I have one level of folders, each containing a CD
Filenames are unaltered - the car truncates them after a certain length
Yes, .mp3
I have CBR (nothing below 160) and VBR - although most of my stuff is encoded using LAME -APS which is higher
MP3 is the codec, LAME is the encoder, -APS

The car is pretty compliant - supports as much as my old Pioneer in-dash did that I picked up about 3 years ago (my old car). I posted some pics and observations in this thread:

CD-R and burn my MP3's as they come, try not to get below 160 also, the system however seems to play anything so dont think its a short coming of the way the disc is burned.

It's crystal clear...

You need radio pro.
With nav you have radio pro.
If you're in the USA you also have radio pro w/o nav if your car is built after March05.
It is currently ONLY possible on cars with radio pro, but w/o nav PRO (what is the US nav).
MP3 with nav pro will be possible, but not before December this year. It will probably be CIP 20.

OK, but where does that leave me. UK Oct04 530d, with business NAV (therefore pro radio), but no mp3 - at least nothing I've tried yet works.

You also need a recent SW version loaded on your car - I think that 18 upwards should be OK.
