Got a 535d last week and have already covered 3000 km in it. The service menu in the idrive says next oil change is in 28 000 km?! Surely this cant be the case. Never owned a beemer before but most brand new cars get their first oil change at around 5000 km. Please advice

Yep, somewhere betweeo 16000 to 24000 km is the BMW standard including first change. You will find plenty of us that do not agree. Some of us on a free service (or service inclusive I think in your terms) are taking to changing our own or paying for a more frequent change but not resetting the system so BMW still shows the scheduled one and does that under the service contract terms. Many others, however, are simply following BMW recommendations. For some it depends also on leasing or owning. Oweners tend to be more inclined to want the added engine assurance by changing oil more often.

I spoke to a BMW garage owner today and he insisted that I change my first oil asap (cars has 9000km). He claims that the first oil is different and is not meant to run for so long. Frankly I am a bit confused as my idrive says that I still have 21000km to go before the first change, why would BMW do something that is not good for their cars?

From what i know the oil that comes with the car is the same we use for oil changes (the dealers use). It might be that the first oil is different but that's when the engine is broken-in on the test bench. No valid information about your statement i'm afraid!!

Mine it is eve worth: more than 18000 km ran and still 13000 km before service.

I am not surprised

because most of modern cars have a service which sometimes now reaches up to 40000 km.

Mercedes is doing also so because they use a sensor which tests the oil quality.

I suspect that the 535D is also using such a sensor
