Actually, the feature is what Philips called "antenna diversity" back in the late 1980s, when they pioneered the concept. The idea is that as FM signals are notoriously sensitive to even small differences in physical position of the aerial (the usual stuff where in order to listen to the radio station you want you need to move the aerial wire and hold it in a particularly inconvenient place), having two aerials and first stage tuners and some "intelligence" in the radio to select the best signal would result in better reception particularly with weak signals. Then along came RDS - EON which requires two tuners to work properly anyway, so both you and the salesperson are right in this case
I don't think this is the explanation for this case. First, in the car you only have one antenna, second the antenna is placed on a moving thing -the car- so even if you had two antennas, the better or poorer reception is "ramdomly" and instantly changing from one to the other.
The only advantage of dual tuner is that while you are receiving a station by tuner A, tunner B is looking for other available stations, so you have the "all stations" option in the menu. Based on this, if you have RDS on, the system can switch from tuner A to tuner B to select the strongest signal for the radio chain you are hearing. (In an area where you receive 2 different signals for the same radio chain).
RDS is also available for Business radio, but in this case, when the signal is below a threshold, the tuner starts searching for the same radio chain in other frequencies, so as you say it does not work so properly...

I have a July 2005 built E60 without Nav. MP3 function is not capable on my car even with the CIP updated. I know that all E60 without Nav that are built after Sep 2005 can play MP3 on the regular deck. So I tried my luck and sent an email to BMW Canada and complained about why my car couldn't play MP3 but the latter production cars can play.... Then BMW Canada get back to me and said they will change the existing CD deck on my car to a newer model so I can play MP3 without any charge. My car will go into the dealership after Xmas to get the job done. So for all of you who doesn't have Nav but wants MP3 function, it's worth a try to make a complaint to the BMW head office of your country and see if you can get what I'm getting too. Hope this can help.
Bambi,

Can you say which dealership you will be getting this done at? How did BMW Canada go about ensuring you would get this done free of charge at your dealership? You can PM me, I would like to get this done too!

Thanks

I don't think we have the RDS-EON system in the US, just RDS. Based on what I know about how the car works over here, I still think the two tuners aren't helping with reception, only the "all stations" feature. My understanding of the diversity antenna is pretty much summed up here:
http://forums.e60.net/index.php?s=&sho...st&p=127868

Again, I don't know much about the EON part of the RDS system so I'd love to hear more about it (in layman's terms, hopefully!)

Bambi, let us know how it all turns out.

I had my M-ASK unit replaced a few months ago with part number: 65-12-6-942-521 and I still could not play MP3s. I have CIP version 23.XX. Unless they installed on my car the CD unit that cannot play MP3, there might be something else to it.

Also, let us know what part number they install on your car.
Good luck
Thanks

Just got my car back today and have the CD deck changed without any charges. The part# they have replaced with is 65-12-6-942-520. Here are a couple things I've noticed so far:
1. Under the TONE menu, the LOGIC7 tab has been changed to SURROUND SETTINGS;
2. WB is added at the top of the entertainment menu;
3. A signal bar is presented on the bottom of the HOME screen even though my phone is not yet connected to the car's bluetooth;
4. And of course, I can now play MP3 CD on my stereo deck.

If anyone would like more information about how I wrote to BMW and other details, please let me know.

I can't explain some of your issues but number three seems normal to me...the signal strength indicator is indicating the connection strength of the car's internal phone -- the one used by BMW Assist, etc. This is normal behavior when there is no additional phone connected to the car...

What's normal may vary. I get a signal strength icon depending on which of my BT phones are connected and the level of their "compatability" in terms of address book transfer etc. I don't think I've ever driven the car without my own phone connected. But prior to connection there is never a signal strenghth indicator though I do know the internal SIM works no problem.
