I own a 06 525i with 76K miles on the road. I bought it little bit over a year with miles just over the warranty (52K). I was not offered a warranty at the time maybe because it was not a BMW dealer. I did had only one problem few months ago when suddenly my engine started to leak oil by the front lowest point of the valve cover. What ended up being was that the two bolts for the valve cover snapped off. I made the repair using OEM parts and problem gone. Besides that I got the regular oil changes, brake pads replacement, normal maintenance.
I am planning to do the following tasks for maintenance purposes as well;
Replace braking system fluid
Replace transmission fluid, gasket and filter
Replace shocks
E60s is the best car I ever had! Not that I have not have brand new cars, but this car is superb!

Every car is going to have it's issues no aging car no matter what brand is going to go without repairs forever. The one thing that worries me the most about our e60's going out of warranty is the idrive because only dealership will be able to help you and the system is expensive to replace. Take it as it comes if you are diligent about maintaining your e60 I think you will be ok our cars are great cars as long as they are well maintained

What are some of the things that break down after the warranty is over?
How much is it cost you if you did or did not have extended warranty?
I'm wondering of a bumper to bumper warranty is worth it or a craps shoot?

Thanks,
All I can tell you is what has broken/been repaired under warranty:

Two window motors (and another one is going)
Emergency brake
A/C Compressor
Rear brakes (new pads and sensors to correct squeaking noise)
Airbag sensor
Software upgrade to fix trans slam problem (not sure is this worked)

It sures sounds like a hit miss thing.

I drive aggressive about 10,000 miles per year or less. I bought the car with basic electronics (no nav). Warranty Direct wants $3100 for 6 years/100K miles and covers bumper to bumper including wear and tear (and break down) but not maintenance items like brakes, tires, shocks, spark plugs, and so on. In short, it covers the big ticket items like engine, tranny, ac, steering, and controller units.

So, if I drive moderately aggressive but fewer than 10,000 miles a year, should I get the warranty? Are sensors for emission part of the emission system because most of the time, the warranty companies do not cover emission systems.
