I thought this car might provide a non-550i performance answer to the IS350, but apparently not--at least yet.

Like the e39 535i, the 540i isn't going to be worth the extra cost, both in terms of initial cost and running costs, as the performance is insignificantly better than the the 6 cylinder models (530i & 535d), according to the UK motoring press.

The V8 is also always much nicer with a loaded car

I've always said the BMW should increase the size/power of the engine in the 530i. For the US market, it's inappropriate for a $50K automobile. For that money, a 3.5liter with 280 - 300HP seems more appropriate. Even my commuter car (Acura TL) has a more powerful 3.2L engine.

The idea of a 530i, 540i and 550i makes a lot of sense to me. I have a 545 and to me it seems like overkill on power, the 540 would have been my choice if I could pick any size I wanted.

In US, it's a big gap between 545/550i and 530i. Please offer 535 and 540 here.
545 is overkill, 550 will be waaayyyy overkill and as gas crisis is here, we'll pay lots of money for the gas.
