My Car is getting upgraded for Bluetooth. I do not have NAV, I want to know, whether upgrading to bluetooth will let me use voice commands or is it something different??

When I press the voice button nothing happens usually. So, I was wondering is there a way to get voice commands activated??

Thanks

without NAV you should be able to use voice-commands for the phone "dial number" "new number 123-456-7899" etc...you just wont be able to navigate idrive verbally

at least that was my experience with my 04 once I had BT enabled

Voice commands, including those for our "approved" Bluetooth phones, are not available on my wife's 05 X5 which has Nav, but not iDrive. I suppose things are the same on the non-X5 5-series autos, but I am not sure. I feel confident that one can't do voice commands without at least Nav on an a 5-series X5, sedan, or touring (wrong--see below). BlueTooth and "Voice Command" are independent of each other except that one can use voice commands, in connection with, a Bluetooth phone to dial, access one's phone directory, etc., on at least an iDrive/Nav equipped 5-series sedan or touring.

Mine is 11/03 build and had no BT or Nav. ECU was replaced and BT was enabled along with voice activation. As some thread discussed about this before, for car w/o Nav, there is no voice command. For car w/o Nav with BT, limited voice command is available just for phone usage.
I can only use those commands as listed in BT manual posted on this site. For all other command for radio, climate and such, one needs to have Nav.
By pressing voice button on steering wheel (the one next to iDrive knob does not work), you'd hear a beep which prompts you for a command. Next time, please try "Number", and you'll get a response from a male voice.

As mentioned, my wife's 05 X5 has Nav and, of course, Bluetooth. Yet, no phone voice commands work, although after pushing the voice button and saying "help" many phone-related options are given. Do you suppose something is not activated/broken or is what she is experiencing just some sort of quirk? Our phones/carrier are on the "BMW Approved List"--Motorolla V551's/Cingular. My phone works perfectly on my 545i.
