I was talking to a guy that works for one of my customers. He has a 745i that he bought as a CPO car. He mentioned the transmisiion slam that happens occasionally. I told him this was a known problem and that they could probably fix it with a software update to his car (He knew nothing about even being able to update software on the car). In conversation, I asked him if he had ever reset the transmission. He hadn't, so I carefully explained how do to it.
Next time I saw him, he said he tried the transmission reset procedure and it seem to make a difference. The car seemed lighter to him. He then proceeded to say that the tack needle went all the way over when he did it, and that he only kept the gas peddle down for about 20 seconds because of this. By the look on my face, I think he could tell that he had not done something right. You guessed it - he missed the part about just turning the key to the on position without starting the engine. He had started the engine and floored his car for 20 seconds, with the rpm's just bouncing off the rev limiter!
I can only imagine what would have happened if these cars did not have a rev limiter.
