I suspect the dealer service writer is telling you the conventional battery can be replaced with an AGM battery; That does require recoding/registering to tell the car that battery type is installed because its charging and discharging profile is different than the older type (conventional) battery. It may also be the case that the connecting cables are different enough to require replacement. The benefit of the AGM battery is its ability to better handle the chores our cars' technology impose. That said, even if the dealer chose to replace your battery with the conventional type you would be looking at at least a couple hundred $'s more than doing a simple battery swap at Autozone or Wal-Mart. Any chance your car is still under warranty - it's a 2008?

If the original battery is a conventional lead acid (white body) type then unless the car is being used for very short start stop journeys and suffering continual discharge problems or loaded with electrical accessories I don't really see the point of switching to an AGM type battery. Just replace with a similarly rated quality calcium lead acid and reset the IBS. No need for any coding.

I replaced mine with an AGM. I did have to code for the new battery type of course but no new wiring is needed.

If your chaging the battery with the same type (capacity/amp) then you only need to get the IBS reset to tell the car its a new battery and start the charging cycle from the new.
If you change the battery in anyway, amp, normal to AGM, AGM to normal etc... you have to get the new battery registered otherwise the car will charge incorrectly (or not enough) and you may get teh "High Discharge" message every so often.

See my previous thread in relation to registering a new 110ah battery inplace of the original 90ah battery.
Its important to either reset IBS if its the same type otherwise the car thinks it has the old battery and charges to the max amp the old battery had, the amp drops over time.
So a 90ah battery after 1-2 years may only have 75-80ah holding charge so IBS records this and only charges to that level, if you change for a new one the IBS still only charges to that level until its reset.

If you change it then the battery must be registered again to the IBS and ECU so they can see the new battery and make full use of the extra capacity or charging cycle, this is very mportant for AGM based batteries as there charge patterns are completely different to standard batteries.

All this can be done using INPA and a $30 cable as shown in my post, takes 10 mins if you see my post with screen shots.
