I have found references to this but not a full description. My 2008 535i Sport needs a new battery. The stealership wanted $680 to "replace your battery with the updated battery and rewire the car to adapt to the new battery."

What is the "updated" battery and why would they have to rewire for it?

My local indy shop wanted about $220 all in to replace the battery... I assume with one that doesn't require rewiring.

No rewiring whatsoever - just remove and replace. Just make sure the replacement battery has the same specs as the old one. If the $220 includes the battery registration then its a good deal.

Stay away from the stealership.

But what is it that the dealer is trying to get me to do?

Pay for markup on parts and markup on labor

Just go to Autozone and get the $90 replacement discussed elsewhere in this forum. And forget about the dealer programming for a new battery. I've had my Autozone batty for two years and it works perfect. If you're going to own a BMW you should be told right away that the dealer is NOT your friend. They're thieves that should be used as a last resort.

dealerships are stealerships... the labour costs they apply makes me think like: "Stephen Hawking and CERN team fixing my car?"

If you want the exact match (size, venting, amps, etc.), the Autozone Duralast 95R-DLG is around $165 and you can easily install yourself. It comes with a 3 year full replacement + 5 more years pro-rated. There is a cheaper battery at AZ, the venting tube will not reach, and it is much smaller, and it only has a 2 year warranty. Not to say that it won't work, I just wanted an exact replacement when I did mine. If you use the AZ battery finder what it comes up with is wrong. Search the forums and you will find that the 95R-DLG is a perfect match.

BTW, $680 just for the battery? Even if they sold it for $200 for markup then that's $480 in labor. Does it take 2 guys 4 hours to install a frigg'n battery at your dealership? Heck, I'd do it for a benjamin if you really wanted to just give your money away.

LOL. Man go to walmart and get yourself an Maxx H8 battery. $100 for 3-4 years is fine I'm sure it has 3 yr warranty. Don't even have to re-register the battery if you do not want to. it's fine. keep reading.

Go to Autozone and you can get the Gold battery with the EXACT same Ah and CCA rating. They install and it works perfectly. A nice big warranty and if it fails in 2-4 years they replace it free. I did it, and I've had no problems.
