Well your problem is you should first put it in sport mode, hold down the DTC button for about 10 Sec. and.................

Drive in manual with sport on. You need to have steady foot control. As your shifting you should lightly let off the gas (called feathering). After a few days of correctly doing it you should be quite smooth. In traffic you should be smoother then a manual. Remember in first there is a lot of torque so if your jumpy with the gas its going jerk. Just be smooth and easy.

Never put the thing in Auto. it just doesn't work well. As others said it truely is a manual. It isn't steptronic or any other type of automatic that allows you to switch to shifting. Auto is only good for launch mode

Thanks for the advice everone...

sometime, when I'm in traffic, Im on 1st gear doing 9MPH, then I have to stop fully, and I'd hit a gas lil hard , the RPM would go up to 3K, car moves, then I gotta press the brake again right away, this is when I feel the jerk,
what am I doing wrong?

Should I really get the SMG software upgrade?

In traffic like that you just got to be easy on the gas. You can stay in first if you got a good control of your foot. Anytime in heavy traffic if you get about 2K to 2.5K I usually shift into second. When your up at 3K your approaching the power band and you got a lot of torque going to you rear wheels and it becomes quite hard to be very smooth. Even in an automatic (put it in first gear) if your up at 3K and let off the gas to stop your going to get a jerky stop.

Typical response from someone that chances are have never spent any real time behind the wheel of a car with SMG. You skipped a M3 because of SMG??? The SMG in the M cars is awesome. Maybe it was jerky to you because you had it set on like 5 or 6. Which is design for track use mainly. Its shifting fast and hard because its expecting you to be driving fast and hard. Not poking around town.

I just never understand when people say SMG is jerky. It just dumb founds me on what your doing to make it jerky. I'm pretty good with a manual and in most conditions the SMG is smoother. You gotta look at SMG as your basically learning how to drive a manual the first time. Your not going to be great at it out of the box but after a few weeks everything comes together. SMG takes time to learn. BMW isn't putting it into there M cars because its crap. It's not there fault that so many people didn't want to take the time to understand what it is and how to drive it. Can't wait to take a whirl in the new dual clutch systems coming out. Suppose to be smooth as butter shifts basically instant.
