If you have done over 45000miles its best to change the gearbox oil and filter.
I did my at 45000km and no leak and very smooth gearbox now

I had a rear seal failure @ 64,000 miles on my Step. Replaced under extended warranty for $180 (deductible + discounted programming fee). Car was sluggish/jerkey changing gears, and I'd notice small pools of fluid in the driveway. The units are sealed so it's probably best to take it to a dealer.

My Ride: 05 545i All stock. ACS front lip. 8K HID Headlight Bulb and 3K HID Foglights
I had that problem with my 05 545i 51K miles. The transmission seal where the wire are located in my tranmission was leaking. Causing the transmission to shift rough and sometimes not move at all in reverse during early morning start ups. BMW had change the seal and the plastic shell for the wires. I believe they also did a software upgrade. Its still at BMW right now. Picking it up tomorrow. I'll let you know how things goes.
